About the Destination

A Garden Unlike Any Other in North Africa

Nestled in the heart of Marrakech's Gueliz district, this legendary garden is a living work of art — a botanical sanctuary designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and meticulously restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1980.

Covering twelve hectares, the garden combines lush tropical vegetation, vibrant cobalt-blue architecture, and world-class cultural spaces into a single extraordinary site. It draws visitors from every corner of the globe, offering an escape from the medina's energy into a world of tranquillity and colour.

Six Highlights Not to Miss

From cobalt-blue architecture to world-class ethnographic collections, the garden rewards unhurried exploration.

01

The Blue Villa

The centrepiece of the garden — the electric blue facade of the original painter's studio is one of the most photographed scenes in all of Morocco. The unique cobalt shade, now known internationally, was chosen by Jacques Majorelle himself and has become inseparable from the garden's identity.

Architecture
02

Exotic Botanical Collections

Wandering the paths reveals an extraordinary diversity of plant life: towering bamboo groves, dramatic agaves and cacti from the Americas, flowering water lily pools, pergolas draped in climbing plants, and groves of date palms creating deep, fragrant shade at every turn.

03

Berber Museum (Amazigh Collections)

One of the finest ethnographic museums in Morocco, housing an extensive collection of Amazigh jewellery, ceremonial costumes, hand-woven carpets, musical instruments, and everyday artefacts assembled across decades. The displays offer genuine insight into the rich cultural heritage of North Africa's indigenous people.

Before You Go

Planning Your Visit

Practical guidance to help you make the most of your time at the garden.

Getting There

The garden is located in Gueliz, the modern district of Marrakech, approximately 15 minutes by taxi from the medina and Djemaa el-Fna. Several bus routes also pass nearby. Parking is limited in the immediate area, so public transport or taxis are recommended.

When to Visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for extended exploration. Mornings are significantly quieter than afternoons. Weekday visits generally involve shorter queues than weekends.

👤

Dress Code

While no strict dress code is enforced in the garden, respectful, comfortable attire is appropriate given the cultural context. Lightweight, breathable clothing is advisable in summer. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — some garden paths are cobbled or uneven.

🌊

Photography Guidelines

Personal photography is generally permitted throughout the garden. Commercial photography and filming require advance approval from garden management. Tripods and professional equipment may be subject to additional restrictions — verify directly on arrival.

🌍

Nearby Attractions

The garden is close to several other notable sites: the Koutoubia Mosque, the medina's souks, the Bahia Palace, and the Museum of Marrakech. The YSL Museum (a separate institution dedicated to the designer's fashion archive) is a short walk away on the same street.

🍴

On-Site Facilities

The garden includes a café and small restaurant offering refreshments and light meals. A botanical bookshop, gift boutique, and the iconic skincare boutique are also on-site. Restroom facilities are available. The café terrace is a pleasant stop mid-visit.

Essential Advice

Six Tips for a Better Visit

Small preparations make a significant difference to your experience in the garden.

Tip 01

Arrive at Opening Time

The garden receives thousands of visitors daily, especially in peak season. Arriving at or shortly after opening gives you the best chance of experiencing the quieter, more peaceful atmosphere the space is famous for.

Tip 02

Budget Adequate Time

Two to three hours is the typical visit duration for those exploring both the garden and the museums. If you only intend to see the outdoor areas, ninety minutes is usually sufficient. Do not rush — the garden rewards slow, attentive exploration.

Tip 03

Bring Cash in Dirhams

While card payment facilities may be available, it is advisable to carry Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) for entry, the café, and the boutiques. Currency can be exchanged at banks and authorised exchange offices throughout Marrakech.

Tip 04

Protect Against the Sun

Despite its lush greenery, significant parts of the garden are open to full sun, especially midday. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a water bottle are strongly recommended from April through October when temperatures can be intense.

Tip 05

Visit the Museums Last

Many visitors make the mistake of entering the indoor museums immediately on arrival. Instead, explore the outdoor garden first while energy is high, and save the air-conditioned museum spaces for the hotter midday period when outdoor heat is at its peak.

Tip 06

Explore the Neighbourhood

Gueliz is Marrakech's most European-influenced quarter and well worth exploring before or after your garden visit. Rue de la Liberté and Avenue Mohammed V offer galleries, independent cafés, and design boutiques quite different in character from the medina.
